Sai Indukuri is one of five new interns that have joined the Core Data and Analytics (CDA) organization this fall. Sai grew up in Madison, Wisconsin attending James Madison Memorial High School and he is originally from Andhra Pradesh, India. He is currently a senior at the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin, he is expected to graduate with a degree in computer science spring 2022.
The CDA team is excited to have Sai on our team and watch all that he will accomplish during his time with Northwestern Mutual. Get to know a little more about our newest data engineer intern, Sai!
Q: Why did you pursue an internship with NM?
A: I always knew that working for NM would allow me to work hands-on with real world problems. I heard from past interns that their time with Northwestern Mutual really helped them prepare for life after graduation, since Northwestern Mutual gives you such valuable experience. Additionally, I liked that the headquarters are in Milwaukee, as I love living in the city and hope to stay here after graduation.
Q: What do you hope to get out of this internship?
A: I hope to build up my skills in analyzing data and gain strong experience in data engineering and feel more confident when working with a bigger group. Working in a larger team environment has also allowed me to work on my leadership skills.
Q: How did you become interested in working in the data science field?
A: At my last internship, I was mainly a software coder, but I also reviewed and recorded data. While my work with data was limited, I really enjoyed working with data. I also took a few classes last semester that focused on data and that I found interesting, and I wanted to explore more of the data side of computer science.
Q: What kind of projects are you working on right now?
A: I am working on creating database conversions and translating data into different formats. We make sure that the data from other departments is translating correctly when it flows from one platform to another. The past few months I have been practicing doing this with my team and working on small conversions, but I am about to start to work on larger conversions by myself now that I have learned the process we use.
Q: What has been your favorite class so far at UWM?
A: One of my favorite courses has been software engineering. In this class, we used software engineering practices and applied them to a real-world work environment. I also really enjoyed a class I took on algorithm and design. Even though this was a rather difficult class, it was a lot of fun because it really forces you to think outside the box.
Q: Does your work at NM correlate with your schoolwork?
A: Yes, it correlates a lot. In my software engineering class, we learned the agile methodology, which we use on my team at Northwestern Mutual, and overall that class functioned very similar to my team at NM. Informatica which creates a flow from each data set. The software I worked with previously only allowed you to manipulate one data source, so learning this has been very beneficial and efficient.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: Yes, I'm part of the Google Developers club at UW-Milwaukee. We have weekly meetings that help members prepare for interviews and career development, and we go to a lot of hackathons to learn more about computer programming and software development. In years past I have just been a member of the club but this year I have been elected to become on officer, which I am really excited about!
Q: What is your dream job?
A: I would love to work as project lead on an engineering team for a company like Northwestern Mutual. Being a project lead allows you to have greater input on the direction of projects, and I think I would really enjoy having that responsibility. But if I’m really dreaming big, my dream job would be to launch my own startup company, I’m not exactly sure what I would do but I think it would be interesting to create an app involving technology.
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
A: I am interested in filmmaking, it’s one of my favorite hobbies. I have written and produced several short films, entered a few film festivals, and I would like to make a full feature film someday.
